As a city with 15 million people, it's no surprise that Kinshasa is always moving. Our drive to work takes us through a very poor part of town, and yet the activity level is vibrant and active throughout.
Many of these people are barely eking out a living. They work hard, they walk extreme distances to support themselves and their families. And they are very innovative with the scarce resources available. It is somewhat staggering to see the contrast between the relative wealth we all enjoy in the United States, and the many things that we take for granted, such as clean, running water, paved roads, cars with doors that work, a wide variety of shopping options, and the list goes on.
While we are still a bit of an enigma to them we have encountered nothing but kind, energetic, and happy people. They are hard working and grateful for what they have. We are humbled and thrilled to be among them!
